Bureau Telecommunications and Post (BT&P)
BT&P is a dynamic and quality focused public law entity with a semi-autonomous status. The organization is overlooked by the Minister of Transport & Communication and is supervised by the State Secretary of Transport & Communication. The organization has its headquarters in Curacao and an office in Sint Martin, Netherlands Antilles.
As the regulatory agent for telecommunications and postal matters in the Netherlands Antilles, BT&P promotes the general interests (of consumers), concessions, permit holders and the government regarding. The most important tasks of the organization include:
- issuing permits and concessions on behalf of the Governor
- enforcing telecommunications and postal laws
- ensuring that the infrastructures under its authority comply with standards
- providing advisory services to the government regarding telecommunication and postal issues.
The Netherlands Antilles has one of the most advanced telecommunication networks in the Caribbean. The telecommunication legislation is among the most progressive of the region. Recently, BT&P drafted a state-of-the-art legislation to replace the telecom act of 1996. This 'new telecom law' will align telecommunication policy with international standards.
